December Art Exhibit

The Library Art Gallery is hosting Joan Wolcott’s Photographs from November 28 through December 28. The artist reception for this exhibit will be held on Saturday, December 9th from 2-4 PM. All are welcome!

Artist’s Statement

Photography is a new/old passion, launched with an SLR camera in art school and reignited with an iphone several years ago. In between, my visual work was mainly drawing and painting.  My recent focus on photography started with taking photos as reference for art work, but I soon found they had a life of their own. A perfect storm of being home during the pandemic, taking more walks outdoors (always with an iphone in my pocket) plus my yearning for artistic expression gave rise to this recent adventure in fine art photography. Previous occupations in graphic design, typography, printmaking, drawing, and fabric painting all surface here, turning some photographs into drawings, prints, or paintings. Everything I’ve done in the past pokes its way through in this new medium.

Compelled by nature and the phenomena of light, shadow and reflection, these photographs chronicle inspiring discoveries. My subjects are often ephemeral–not things so much as a momentary capture of time, of changing light, season, or weather.  Each photo catches a spontaneous moment of focus and flow when time stood still and a deeper resonance was felt. While made in response to something outwardly seen, the photographs reflect something unseen, something inside the one behind the lens who finds reverence and delight in the everyday and is eager to share the gems in her pocket.

Fun Facts

Numbers! This is my 3rd solo show at Lincoln Library (Creation Scrolls, 2004; Drawings, 2013). We’ve loved this town for some time–it’s our 4th decade here, and we’ve moved around town a bit (5 times!)  And BTW, the 2 stained glass windows in the atrium were created by my artist/designer husband, Craig Elliott.
