The town of Lincoln, Massachusetts has a rich history. From its days as a Precinct of Concord to its leadership in land conservation, Lincoln has generated stories that must be kept and told to future generations. As a crossroads on April 19, 1775, as the home of Bauhaus and other modern architecture, as a community that has fostered authors from Thoreau to Jane Langton, as a rural farming village turned suburban commuter town, Lincoln stands among the premier places in the panorama of American life.
About the Lincoln Town Archives
The Lincoln Town Archives is a unique partnership between the Lincoln Library and the Office of the Town Clerk, governed pursuant to a Memorandum of Understanding between the two entities and endorsed by Town Meeting in 2008. The collaboration has enabled an integration of the town’s historic cultural, private and public documents into a single inventoried collection, housed at both Town Hall and the Library. Management responsibilities for the Town Archives are shared by Library Director, Melissa Roderick, and Town Clerk, Valerie Fox and Archivist Matthew Lincoln, splits his time between the two sites.
Archives Mission Statement
The mission of the Lincoln Town Archives is to collect, preserve, and provide access to the history and culture of the town of Lincoln, Massachusetts. Collections include municipal records, manuscripts, books, photographs, audio-visual materials, and other ephemera documenting the history of Lincoln from 1746 to the present.
Lincoln Town Archives Advisory Council
The Town Archives Advisory Council (TAAC) brings designees of each of twelve local historic preservation entities together twice yearly to seek opportunities to collaborate and amplify their individual efforts, as well as to learn from one another, and build a network of professional peers.
Mission Statement
The Town Archives Advisory Council’s principal purposes are as follows:
- To consider and make policy recommendations concerning the acquisition, preservation, and access to the town’s collection of archival materials.
- To make practical recommendations concerning the integration of both private and public records into a single collection housed in part at the Library and in part at Town Offices.
- To engage in public education efforts to raise awareness of the existence, extent and value of the town’s various public and private historical assets.
- To provide opportunities for productive collaboration among its members and their institutions.
